A DIY Pest Control Guide For Homeowners
Don’t Invite Pests In
Your home’s curb appeal is great if you’re trying to attract homebuyers or create a welcoming place for guests, but your home might also attract unwelcome visitors. When bugs creep into your home, they’re usually looking for shelter, water, and food. Changes in the weather and temperature might drive them to come inside, but you can make your home less appealing to pests by making it much harder to find nourishment. Don’t leave pet food and water bowls out overnight, and don’t create places for pests to hide, like stacks of old papers or general clutter. Cardboard boxes make inviting nests, so consider swapping them out for plastic bins.
Clear the Air
Since pests seek moisture, keeping the air in your home dry can deter them from setting up residence. Good ventilation is key, especially in those spaces that are prone to moisture like the attic, basement, and any crawlspaces your house might have. Consider investing in a dehumidifier if any of these areas don’t have proper ventilation built in.
Prepare the Yard
If you want to keep pests out of your home, proper protection actually starts outdoors. If the yard surrounding your house attracts pests in the first place, it’s only a matter of time before they encroach on your living space. That’s why it’s important to mow the grass often and remove any hiding spaces that might invite those intruders. Eliminate any junk, broken limbs, or piles of leaves or other debris in your yard to create a wider space between your home and the pests that want in. If you have any trees with limbs touching your house, get a professional to cut those limbs back, as they can create bridges into your home.
